Start with the right beat file

Use the highest-quality version of the beat you have, ideally a WAV, and a stems version if the producer offers one. Stems let you turn down a melody under a busy verse or mute a hat roll. An MP3 with a producer tag on it limits how good the final record can sound.

Make sure you have the right to use the beat. A free download usually comes with limits on release, and a lease has its own terms. Dhun does not clear beats for you, and a music generator may refuse a recording it recognizes.

Timing is the pocket

Rap is rhythm before anything else. Check that the first word lands where you meant it to and that long phrases do not drift late. A consistent offset can be fixed by moving the clip. If a line sits ahead or behind on purpose, say so, because snapping everything to a grid can take the swagger out of a performance.

Clean the space between phrases. Breaths, lip noise and room sound get louder once a vocal is compressed, and they sit right on top of the beat. Remove what distracts and keep the breaths that carry the rhythm.

Give the voice its own lane

Many rap vocals work closer and drier than a pop vocal, with a short room or a tempo-synced delay on selected words in place of a long reverb. Keep the low end under the voice clean, and use a high-pass filter to remove rumble that clouds the 808. If the kick and bass fight, decide which one owns the lowest notes.

Doubles on the ends of lines and ad-libs between them build energy without hiding the lead. Keep them lower than the main vocal and pan them away from the center so the words stay in front. In the master, leave the kick some room: a limiter pushed too hard flattens the punch that made the beat work.
